Our Commitment to Sustainability

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Gift & Thrift uses the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to guide and report on our environmental impact. By aligning our initiatives with the SDGs, we ensure that our work in affordable energy, responsible consumption, recycling and repurposing, education and economic growth contributes to a more equitable and sustainable world.

Gift & Thrift’s Priority Goals

Four of the Sustainable Development Goals are especially relevant to the work and mission of Gift & Thrift. The following goals help us set clear targets, measure our progress and transparently report on our contributions towards a more just world.

1. Responsible Consumption & Recycling
The majority of our positive environmental impact stems from the recycling of clothing, shoes, paper and metal. In 2024 alone, Gift & Thrift processed over 465,000 pounds of materials, whose recycling efforts helped avoid more than 3,100 metric tons of carbon. (That’s equivalent to taking about 670 cars off the road or powering over 400 homes for a year with electricity!)

2. Climate Action
There is an urgent need for global action to combat climate change and its impacts. We promote sustainable consumption through the sale of gently used items, encouraging our community to reduce waste and lower their carbon footprint for a healthier planet.

3. Affordable & Clean Energy
In 2024, the solar panels that power our building generated over two-thirds of our energy needs. We take pride in knowing that our operations contribute to environmental sustainability and promote responsible production in both the fashion and energy sectors.

4. Decent Work & Economic Growth
Productive employment and decent work for all enables sustainable economic growth, creating more opportunities. We embody this goal by providing meaningful work and fair wages, fostering a supportive work environment while contributing to the local economy and engaging with community groups.
